Vital tips you need to know before traveling to Egypt

Egypt is a fascinating and diverse country with a rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning natural beauty. Whether you're planning a visit to the pyramids, cruising the Nile River, or exploring the bustling cities, there are some important tips to keep in mind to make the most of your trip. Here are 7 tips to help you prepare for your visit to Egypt:

  1. Dress appropriately: Egypt is a conservative country, so it's important to dress appropriately, especially when visiting religious sites. Women should wear long skirts or pants, and cover their shoulders and chest, while men should avoid wearing shorts or tank tops. Remember to also wear comfortable and breathable clothing, as the weather can be hot and humid.

  2. Negotiate prices: Bargaining is a common practice in Egypt, especially when shopping in local markets and bazaars. Make sure to negotiate prices, but do it respectfully and with a smile. Also, be aware of the local currency and exchange rates, and avoid changing money with unauthorized street vendors.

  3. Hire a local guide: Hiring a local guide is a great way to learn more about Egypt's history, culture, and traditions. A guide can also help you navigate the local customs, and ensure that you don't miss any must-see attractions. Make sure to choose a licensed guide, and negotiate the price in advance.

  4. Be prepared for the traffic: The traffic in Egypt can be chaotic and overwhelming, especially in big cities like Cairo. Be prepared for long delays and heavy congestion. Road accidents are also deadly and my recommendation is to get an Uber, which is safer than a taxi, as drivers have to be vetted.

  5. Be aware of the weather: Egypt has a hot and dry desert climate, with temperatures that can reach over 40°C in the summer months. Make sure to check the weather forecast before your trip, and pack accordingly with lightweight and breathable clothing, sunscreen, and a hat. Always stay hydrated (avoid drinking tap water!) On the other end, in December during winter, Egypt can get quite chilly and I would highly recommend to pack a sweater or jacket.

  6. Be aware of the local scams: Unfortunately, tourists are sometimes targeted by scammers in Egypt. Common scams include overcharging for taxis, selling fake souvenirs, and distracting you while pickpocketing. Stay alert and aware of your surroundings, and don't be afraid to say no or walk away from a suspicious situation.

  7. People Stare in Egypt (Especially at Women): People in Egypt will stare or ogle, especially at women. It’s not “unsafe” per se, but it makes westerners feel uncomfortable.

Two filmmakers made a documentary about it in 2015 (The People’s Girls), and created a video called “Creepers on the Bridge“. (it’s disheartening to watch)

My general recommendation for women, particularly in Cairo: Travel in a group tour if possible, or at least not alone.

Visiting Egypt can be an unforgettable experience, and by following these tips, you can ensure that your trip is enjoyable, safe, and memorable. Remember to stay respectful and open-minded, and embrace the unique beauty and culture of this amazing country!

The above picture of me was taken at the old Egyptian Museum in December 2021. The jacket I had definitely helped with the chilly weather and mysterious vibes.
